Freewriting: investigating your own expertise
If you haven't done so already, write a personal "authority" list, naming subjects about which you have some expertise or information. Consider your hobbies, academic interests, occupational skills, friends and family members, social problems, community concerns, art, sports, travel, animals, films, TV shows, and so forth. Jot down a few words or phrases indicating what you know about each item on your list. Emphasize what or who it is, how it happens or how to do it, and when or where it happens. Since one of these topics may develop into an essay for this course, spend at least fifteen minutes on this exercise.
