Obligations to Society sample essay
Barring the obligations before employers, authorities, and customers, employees also have obligations to society. These obligations include (but are not limited to) fairness, non-maleficence, and truthfulness. Fairness implies performing work activities that everybody would agree to. In other words, procedures and decisions should adhere to and promote equity and equality, and discourage discrimination. Non-maleficence means the job must by no means cause any harm to members of society. And finally, truthfulness implies that workers must keep the society informed about the relevant issues, and at the same time they must not lie to society regarding these important issues; society has a right to know the truth.
Although these obligations are the same for all employees, some positions confront with them often. Journalists, for example, may very frequently find themselves violating these obligations because they might not always be honest while writing their articles. They may also include lies to their stories and tailor them to add effect. Another position that very often confronts with obligations before society is teacher. Teachers work and interact with students; some of them they may like, while some of them they may dislike. They can have many valid reasons for these personal attitudes, but anyway they violate the ethical principles of obligations to society because they do no treat their customers – students – equally.
