Goal–setting sample essay
There is no way for an organization to measure its progress, develop a path for reaching its objectives, allocate its resources effectively and manage its time wisely without setting goals. Goal-setting also allows businesses to identify their weaknesses and strengths, to develop effective strategies, to evaluate performance and to understand financial statistics. However, it is impossible to proceed to goal-setting unless an organization has identified its fundamental purpose. A firm should be able to describe its reason for existence in a concise way. This is called an organization’s statement of purpose or mission and reflects how it fills human wants or how it impacts the world. Mission statement helps to develop organizational philosophy: its core values, beliefs and ethical principles. Then the top-level management can proceed towards developing a strategic vision, which identifies were the company should be headed or what should be its future focus. The development of an enterprise’s overall strategy helps to set organizational goals. Goals can be long-term (in distant future) as well as short-term (in nearest future). It is management’s fundamental responsibility to make sure that organizational goals are not contradictory! Since sometimes it is difficult to integrate departmental, functional and overall organizational objectives.
Organizational goals can be normally categorized as follows: profitability, employee needs and well-being, service to customers and/or other recipients, social responsibility, etc. In our organization goal-setting is used to help engage all employees in the decision-making process, integrate all levels of management, and to communicate organization’s objectives to everyone. We have written goals for this year. For instance, the yearly goal is to increase productivity meaning, having the ability to handle additional responsibilities. Currently, our direct department has signed an agreement with additional medical licensing boards. The present system is a less moderate approach – entering client applications manually. The future goals consist of electronic applications.
There are many factors which should be considered when setting a goal. Those factors can be divided into internal and external to an organization. Internal factors are the following: company’s strengths, competencies, competitive capabilities; its weaknesses, deficiencies and where the company is at disadvantage; top management’s vision, leadership, human resource skill. They also include business philosophy, ethical principles, shared values and company culture. As for external factors – a broad range of aspects should be taken into an account. Competitive conditions and industry situation analysis is vital when evaluating likely opportunities and possible threats. Economic, political, regulatory, technological, community citizenship and societal considerations are also important for setting organizational goals. In short, a comprehensive analysis of internal and external characteristics should be undertaken for successful goal-setting in any organization.
