The Day I Was Born sample essay
Even though many days of our lives seem to be either boring or ordinary, every day play an important role in the history of the entire planet. Different laws, military campaigns, scientific discoveries, and space launches occur every day, only we do not see them, hence do no play attention to them. Therefore, although my birthday really is an important day for my family and I, it also is an important date for the world, because many different events took place, and what I am going to do is to introduce these important events.
For the United States of America, September 25 is a prominent date, especially for African-American part of the population. The events of 1954-1957 in Arkansas have changed the educational system of the United States for good. The nine black students, also referred to as the Little Rock Nine, experienced heavy psychological and physical assaults from white students when the first law prohibiting racial discrimination came to power in Arkansas. Although local officials and the head of Central High School in Little Rock were for the change, white students were being very hostile, and the conflict has been lasting for three years before the Little Rock Nine first entered the school. Although they were accompanied with armed troops that kept the entire following year standing in school corridors, nonetheless, they were the first in the history of the United States African-American high-school students. The day they entered the school and began their studies was exactly September 25, 1957.
That same day, two years later, the leader of Union of Soviet Socialistic Republics (USSR) Nikita Khrushchev was meeting the President of the United States Dwight Eisenhower. As those times there was a friction between the Soviets and America, also known as the Cold War for its passiveness. The purpose of Khrushchev’s visit was exactly to resolve many relevant issues with President Eisenhower. Both national leaders were optimistic about the talks. Although they did not make any treaty, the result of the two-day summit was successful, because Khrushchev and Eisenhower have touched upon many issues, the Berlin conflict in particular. After that meeting, the relationship between the Soviet Russia and America became more-or-less friendly, and President Eisenhower agreed to visit Russia during the following year (1960). Therefore, the events that took place in Camp David in Maryland on September 25, 1959 were the causes of peace of the two great but hostile countries of West and East. Unfortunately, this friendship ended next year and Eisenhower visit was cancelled because the Russians shot American spy jet and captured the pilot.
Criminal world did not pass by unnoticed. Right at those times, a figure named Meyer Lansky was the mob boss in New York. The son of Russian immigrants started his criminal life in 1920’s, when he formed the New York “syndicate.” Lansky was a harsh and ruthless criminal leader, who made as much as seven hundred million dollars or so during 1970’s. His so-called friends were scattered around the country, and were in change of separate criminal sectors. One of such sectors was gambling in Florida and Cuba; his friend Little Augie Carfano represented his interests there. However, friendship and crime are incompatible, and for some reasons the criminal leader decided to murder his so-called friend. On September 25, 1959 Meyer Lansky’s assassins succeeded in ttheir attempt to assassinate Little Augie Carfano in New York City. Alas.
Another bloody event that happened on September 25, 1942, was the attack on the Germans in Norway. The Nazi invaded Norway in 1940, and established local secret headquarters there. Turned out that British military intelligence was skilled enough to break German codes and locate the headquarters in Norway. Soon after that, on September 25, 1942, British bombers attacked the headquarters. Although they destroy the secret place, they did hit some Nazi officers.
Now let us go back to the end of the nineteenth century, 1897. That year a prominent American writer was born. He I the author of such books as As I Lay Dying, The Sound and The Fury, Absalom, Soldier’s Pay, and many more book that are included in the schooling program. The name of the author is William Faulkner, who was born on September 25, 1897 near Oxford, Mississippi.
One and a half centuries earlier, a French engineer Nicolas Joseph Cugnot was born in Lorraine, Austria on September 25, 1725. This person is the founder of first automobiles, as well as the first steam-powered engine. His first vehicles were bulky steam-powered tractors (or tricycles), and although they did not have stereo systems and air-conditioners inside they are considered the first automobiles in the world.
Having discussed the events above, we can see that September 25, the day of my birth, is truly a prominent day in the history of the world, and the United States in particular. We have taken a look at several important military events of World War II, and the Cold War, saw ruthless gangster Lansky’s betrayal, testified the birth of great American writer William Faulkner in Mississippi, and took a glance on outstanding discoveries of the French engineer. Our journey spans from 1725 to 1959. What I can conclude is that I now see that every day is very important in the world history. Even now, when you read this passage, in some distant lands people invent new technologies, write masterpieces of literature, construct great military plans, and - last but not least – many people are born, who would hopefully contribute to the well-being of nations.
