Use of Statistics in Human Resource sample essay
Judith Ross’s essay Dealing with the Real Reasons People Leave describes the most frequent reasons why employees leave the workplace. The only way to determine these reasons is to conduct a research, asking randomly picked employees who are about to leave. Ross mentions such researches in the essay, citing Leigh Branham’s study. It is important to note that any research, including the one conducted by Branham, utilizes statistics to describe the collected data. Without statistical analysis, or statistical inference, no professional research can be conducted (dealing with great quantities and numerical data).
Employers of today have understood that keeping employees is important for the organization, because nowadays more employees leave the workplace without hesitation than ever before. In order to prevent abrupt and unexpected resignations, employers can turn to some of the statistical approaches. Collecting the data (mostly nominal) from current employees, and preparing descriptive statistical analysis can change the way employers treat their workers, and contribute significantly to the environment in the workplace. Citing Branham, Ross states that 80 percent of employees leave because of bad working conditions, not the payment complaints. This statement, in turn, also implies that simpler statistical methods are utilized.
Barring links to Branham’s studies, Ross’ statements also could not have appeared out of the blue; these key methods employers should turn to are proven through time. If a particular technique were not tested in real working conditions, than there would be no evidence that such technique would prevent workers from leaving. Hence, statistical approach should also applied when determining a successful management technique, such as expressing appreciation or enriching employees’ experience.
Generally, statistics can be applied to any sphere of business or life in general. The science that collects, describes, and analyses data can and must be utilized in every branch of technology and business, including human resource. Calculating total number of workers, their work hours, their days off and holidays, salaries, production rates, and the changes during short and long periods, - all this can be done wisely and accurately with the help of statistics. Testing hypothesis, like whether this or that technique is good for employee retention, or whether such policy would enhance workers’ contribution, is also essential in any business. That is why modern businesspeople and human resource managers should use this great science to collect, describe, and analyze the data to fully understand the organization from within, and make wise and profitable decisions.
