Charles Demuth's Figure Five in Gold Charles Demuth is one of the most important figures of American Precisionism art movement. His contribution to American Modernism, as well a some other artists’, made a significant impact on the development of American art. A more Western version of European Cubism, Precisionism impresses me very much, especially Demuth’s artworks, that is why I have chosen his painting Figure Five in Gold (link to image provided at the end of essay). In general, I love the painting because of its ver original and unique setting. I like the overall style the artist used, which definitely belongs to modernism; the golden five (numbers associate with currency lately) represents contemporary rapid financial development and increase of capital. The angles of the object depicted within the artwork are very precise, as though their shape really matters for the artist. I also love how Demuth pays attention to insufficient details; they are as important from the viewpoint of precision, that they are as precise as the major objects of the painting. Several characteristics of the painting testify that it identifies with Precisionist art movement. Such characteristics include paying close attention to details, spending so much effort on minor unimportant objects as though they are the major ones, using brushes very neatly and adhering to geometrical lines, and also paying very much attention to the shapes of objects and highlighting every angle and slope. Another characteristic of Precisionism is the strong contrast between two adjacent objects (or part of objects). Ultimately, the style of Charles Demuth's Figure Five in Gold is a great, and definitely identifies with Precisionist branch of Modernism. Link to the Picture Demuth, Charles. Figure Five in Gold.
