Defining Marriage A marriage is a union of two people certified with an authorized representative. Although in some countries same-sex marriages are allowed, same-sex marriages and same-sex parenting is prohibited in vast majority of countries of the world, plus no religion accepts same-sex marriages. Thus, a marriage is a legal union of two people, who in good will have decided to live together, the major reason for which is reciprocal love. The general notion of marriage is changing over time. Marriages now are much different from marriages of 15th century. A classic marriage is one in which the man is the head of the family. He works to get food, and to create good conditions for the entire family. He also protects other members. His spouse, the woman, is responsible for the household and for the children, if any. To get married does not mean to have children, especially now, but in earlier times most marriages turned a couple into a huge family. So, the woman’s responsibility is to keep the house clean, cook food, and watch the kids. As mentioned earlier, modern perception of marriage has changed greatly, mostly because of the distortion of the classic role of women. Due to feminism and women’s aspiration towards equality, women now can easily perform men’s role in a marriage, i.e. to make money. In addition, as the world gets more civilized, men become more humble and less courageous, because there is no need for them to be courageous. But I believe that marriages, in which the man is not the head, are doomed. The definition of marriage may stay the same, but the actual life of these two people has changed greatly during last 50 years. Many marriages are doomed because of the shift of the woman’s role in society and for other reasons. And although it is great for a woman to make money, she should never forget who she is if she wants a happy marriage.
