Kmart, Wal-Mart, Target
The three major discount stores in America are Kmart, Target, and Wal-Mart. These three chains are similar in terms of their country-wide distributions chains, their huge stores, and their relatively low prices. However, each of thee three store chains is different from the other two, and is unique in a certain way. This technique is absolutely normal and objective, because instead of competing on the same arena, it is better to attract a different niche of customers. Thus, even though these three stores are very similar, they are different from each other in their target markets.
Wal-Mart is the biggest of the three. It is targeted at lower income families, because its prices are extremely low. The stores are literally filled with products and don’t leave much space for the customers, which means that they don’t pay that much attention to the interior or the beauty. What they do stress is the prices, and company’s slogan proves this assertion, “Always low process. Always.” Their target customers are high-school graduates in their 50’s or 60’s, and not very fashionable.
Kmart is, on the other hand, offers higher prices, which means they attract wealthier, more educated, and more fashionable people. They do pay attention to design and interior which supports their customers’ need to feel comfortable.
Target, however, is completely different from the two above; it refers to itself as a discount department store. They target younger, more fashionable, and even more educated people. The average household income of their customers is $55,000, and roughly 80% are women (Wiki, 2006).
