Percent vs. per cent

Posted on July 10, 2007

To indicate the hundredth part, always write «percent».

I have noticed that many writers on the web mistakenly write per cent, instead of percent. This is a very bad mistake, because per cent means “per one cent” or “per hundred” (like in “miles per hour”). But, if the writer intends to write the word, indicating the sign ‘%’, then the word percent must be used, regardless of the quantity. Therefore, whenever you write about percentage, be sure to write percent in 102% percent of cases.
