Smoking youth: quit now for healthier future
Posted on June 13, 2007Smoking among students is dropping. Quit smoking now!
Canadian federal department Health Canada conducts the Youth Smoking Survey on a regular basis to find out the percentage of youngsters (grades 5 to 9) who smoke. The survey revealed that the number of smoking students is decreasing in long term. As compared to the 1994 survey, the percentage of youth who ever tried smoking has dropped by half, resulting in 21%. The number of current smokers had also diminished significantly to 2%, compared to 7% in 1994. Fortunately, the indicators are dropping, which means that Canadian students realize the damage of smoking.
Tobacco companies target their products to young males under 25 years of age. You are in that category, so watch out, because the advertisements (if they are allowed in your area) will try to catch your attention and attract the most innate parts of your consciousness. If you refuse and wait for several years, you are unlikely to start smoking after you are 25 years. So, students are the most vulnerable niche for the tobacco industry.
Make sure you fully understand the harm of tobacco before you try your first cigarette. Smoking kills over half a million Americans each year, as NIDA reports.
